Translating Intent into Gameplay & The Assassin's Creed | Classic AC
Просмотров 3,2 тыс.14 дней назад
Excerpt from the upcoming Rogue's Chat with AnimusDrifter, where we talk about our thoughts on players being able to translate their intent into in-game actions, and how classic Assassin's Creed's more freeform systems adhered more closely to the backing philosophy of the player-character's faction. This ten-minute topic was something I wanted to have an easy way to link and reference in the fu...
AC Shadows | One Of The Gameplay Showcases Of All Time

Great stealth and an interesting system for picking and pursuing your next task makes Assassin's Creed Shadows a curious game to keep an eye on, but a gameplay demo that spread itself too thin, and still leaves too many questions unanswered means I don't know where to stand on this game, just yet. I'm excited for half, of half of this game; Naoe's half, and the half of her that surrounds her st...

Destiny 2: The Final Shape Mission: Iconoclasm Prismatic Hunter Berserker (Strand Titan) This definitely FELT like one of the harder pieces of story content in the game so far, I think it's a lot tougher than Calus and Savathun ever were but your mileage may vary. Part of what contributes to that feeling and perception is the game's UI conveying that you have to loop its mechanic three times, b...

Hades II [Early Access, PC] I think Poseidon is probably the strongest boon-path in the game at the moment. He's VERY easy to fight with, he has a lot of damage-supplementing effects, a lot of crowd-control/AoE which becomes more important the deeper into a run you get, and he also tends to have 'rich-get-richer' style snowballing mechanics. If a run starts out well for you (like if you begin w...

Hades II [Early Access, PC] Cerberus Boss Fight Scorch Daggers, empowered/boon'd by Hestia. I think this was my first Cerberus clear, so I recorded it for posterity and because I always wanted to make Scorch work for me. Rogue Prince of Persia | This Wallrun MIGHT Jump Into Greatness One Day

The Rogue Prince of Persia leaps onto Steam today, May 27th in Early Access. It's an action roguelike made by those who worked on Dead Cells, and as such there are some similarities. 1:44:50 While being a lot more simple in it's animations and movement, Mirage still is worls less reliable than Unity in it's parkour. Despite the fair talk about Unity's inconsistency, at least it makes up for it with different things, like variety in movement, animations and dialonal parkour.

    • @LeoKRogue
      @LeoKRogue День назад

      Whether that actually makes up for it is very subjective, though. Both Mirage and Unity are pretty inconsistent but for some players pretty animations and diagonal movement that frankly barely makes a difference in how you actually play moment to moment are simply not enough, which I guess is fair. Like if I were to ask AnimusDrifter, or Jcers, or Lang, or most serious people who've put thousands of hours into these games, "Does this make up for it for you?" they'd probably say no.

    One really ignorant misconception people love to make is “Black flag good pirate game, Bad AC” and they can’t be anymore wrong, this game is literally about the Assassins Creed, their philosphies, freedom vs control etc.. but that’s a whole different story. I can’t watch the ending of Black flag without shedding a tear, truly my favourite and in my opinion the best Assassins creed overall. It honestly gets easier and easier as the game goes on since you get access to so many strong items and allies can come with you on most of the hardest missions and bosses. There were two or three fights at the most where I actually had to reset it several times to learn timings so I could stop dying, but most missions I just beat on my first attempt.

    I like to combine stealth and combat in this game. I start by assassinating or knocking out guards, until I'm spotted, then I poison my weapons, go ham with poison arrows, and parry. A lot. I like to use the master assassin outfit from the first blade dlc both for looks as well as the poison effects added to the vanish ability. I also have the ability from the atlantis dlc that makes unsuspecting victims disintegrate upon assassination.

    There are so many more good parkour systems added to Unity that to this day I think it has the best free running mechanics of the entire series. And a lot better than anything that came after. I really wish they had kept this system and fine tuned it going forward. But I think they misinterpreted the criticisms of this game, and also wanted to make it more accessible going forward for new players, and as a result the veterans of the series lost out. I really dislike the direction this franchise is heading. I would love a developer that isn’t Ubisoft, and that doesn’t have how much money the can squeeze out of the gamers economy to work on a future assassins creed game. But unfortunately, I know that can never happen.

    • @LeoKRogue
      @LeoKRogue 3 дня назад

      Movement was just never really too valued by the average player, which is a bit of a shame. It started being simplified in AC3, continued to be simplified in Unity, and continued to be simplified even further in Origins until now we basically have nothing left.

      Thanks for the comment, Zoe. I hope I didn't oversell the game, this is just how I felt after playing it. And, I still like it even now. The story didn't really hit anywhere near as hard as the classics did, that's still something modern AC really struggles to recapture, but the _vibe_ of being an Assassin in a city, this game gave me that again, and it's something I really, really loved. Fun fact: In Polygon's "An oral history of Assassin's Creed" piece they did in 2018, Patrice Desilets (creative director for AC1, 2 and Brotherhood) could NOT SHUT UP about how "Nothing is true, everything is permitted" was just as central to the game's design as it was to the Assassins. Through Altaïr's movement the player was meant to embody an ideal of Freedom, and a "go anywhere, do anything" attitude was something the developers really had in mind while putting the game together. They *wanted* players to break the bounds of what was considered acceptable. Hearing his words echoed in your conversation is surreal, and telling -- both of how sharply those themes were communicated in the games, and how knowlegeable you two are about AC as a media object.

    • @LeoKRogue
      @LeoKRogue 5 дней назад

      Yes, I think it's awesome. You should really give that piece a read if you can! Playing through AC:B knowing that Patrice was obsessed with in-city horse but had to wait 5 years to implement it is kind of funny; but also strangely moving. They really had a very specific vision for the total experience of AC1 they couldn't realize until much later (and some might even say they never did). AC was his baby.

    Hey Leo, I wanna say this video and your other video on how to stop hurting really helped me in my personal life and it lead me to dig deeper into many things and not only did those videos have that effect but your whole channel has. because of your channel I've changed as a person which seems a bit weird but you led me to look at many things in many different ways and your talks about AC led me to have a very different and more "rogue-like" look on life ;). During the time I originally found your channel, I was struggling with relationships, I kept getting into relationships unprepared and most of my relationships at that time didn't even last half of a year because I was just a negative force intruding on parts of their life. I was very hateful and angry at the world, my outlook was very much a "narcissistic-edgy-communist" type of one and I had a god-complex type of mindset and I think I looked at things in this way as a coping method to deal with my trauma and how I was treated and what I did was tunnel my past trauma into hate towards myself, people around me in my personal life and the world. I also hid who I was and my sexual preference for a long time, I also hid hobbies I loved from people to not seem like or be called a "nerd" or a so called "loser" or even some homophobic slurs that got tossed at me at a young age. Watching you was like seeing how I wanted to be displayed in front of me and it made me heavily reflect on my life, my way of living, my philosophy and how I treated people around me. This was a long time ago now, and I've completely changed my way of living and that push that helped get me there was you and your channel, now I'm a much more positive person, alot more of an emotionally intelligent person, quite a spiritual type of person and quite an optimistic person. Anyway thank you Leo for making the content you do and being the person you are, without your channel I don't know where I'd be~ <3 Also I have a question if you don't mind, how do you deal with conflict and when your opinion clashes with another so they shoot yours down? I feel like I let things get to me sometimes and I just start being flat out rude to them when my intentions are to normally try and help them and show them my way of understanding but is it sometimes better to perhaps just ignore them depending on the topic/reason? I'm just curious on your way of dealing with it, of course through life I have developed ways to deal with it but recently it's been getting to me a bit more. Once again Thank You Leo, the impact you've had on my life is unexplainable. Stay stafe and may fog shroud you, may stars light your way and may the night keep you safe ;] <3 (I'm quite tired when writing this so my apologies if anything I've said or if my grammar seems a bit sloppy x_x)

      Hello Kei. Thank you for your brave and wonderful comment. I know it took energy and time to write, and I appreciate it. I'm glad that the things I've said over the years have done something to inspire you or give you strength. Things I've seen elsewhere online have done the same for me, so it's something I've always hoped to be able to give at least one stranger online, just like it was given to me at times. Existing as our authentic, true self is probably the most important thing anyone can do in this world, so regardless of the perceptions of others (but of course, always influenced by them to some extent) there's nothing more valuable you can give to yourself than that. Anything else kind of kills your soul a little, and takes you further away from truly living. I imagine a lot of people, especially those who are deeply invested in hobbies linked to online spaces, like gaming, anime, roleplaying, creative writing and the like have this same fear of being mistreated, excluded or disrespected for the 'crime' of simply being properly passionate about something. Fortuna forbid anyone genuinely cares about something, or this world will try to make you pay for it, in ways big or small. I still have this fear and apprehension, and I still hide a lot of what's really precious to my heart except with people I deeply trust, who I know will appreciate it. But it's nice to be able to be bold sometimes and stand our ground, to relentlessly Love at least _some things_ publicly and out loud. It helps manifest the reality of what We Are in the eyes of others and it helps other people draw on the courage to do the same, and Live more fully themselves. It's a small thing, but it's nice. I will say I'm a little surprised to see someone say watching me could be an example of how they wanted to be. I've never considered myself a good example or role-model of anything, I've probably ruined or destroyed more beautiful, cherished things in my life than anyone else I know, and I still pay for it to this day. I will probably suffer the consequence for my failures until I die. Some of the things I've failed to hold onto, I'll never forgive myself for, and I don't think I can be redeemed for. Even so, or maybe because of all that, I'm glad you could take something from the things and mindsets I've shown to the Internet. Maybe someone else can do a better job than me, with the Hope they got. On the note of conflict and changing other people's minds, it's a lesson I keep having to be taught over and over again, but it's actually impossible to convince someone of anything in this world, unless they're someone who deeply Loves and Trusts you, and is Willing to actually Listen to you. Sometimes, people you thought you could count on to do that, turn out to betray you and leave you Unheard once again afterward, no matter how much you beg, or how angry you get, or how kind and reasonable what you try to explain is, so you can never really have certainty. That was really hard to integrate, and I still don't want to Believe it. I really don't. I don't want to live in the kind of world where something that awful can be True, but, either way. In most situations, if you have true Awareness of yourself, and Know what you say to be sensible and true, if someone else won't listen to you, it's best for both yourself and them to ignore them and let them damn themselves through their refusal to Try. The only way I've been able to learn some things is to Experience certain situations myself, and only then did things I _should've_ understood years ago finally "click" and make sense. It's not a matter of stubbornness, the mind and soul literally can't Understand something until we process it in a way where we can actually See it. Until that moment, the smartest person in the world could explain it the easiest way possible, and it would still be completely incomprehensible. Because of that, learning when someone is ready for certain ideas and when someone is not is a Skill you begin to grow, and it's really fucking hard to get good at. I'm still terrible at it. I will probably be terrible at it for years. But a lot of people don't even know it's a thing, so. I hope any of this helped. You caught me at a point in my life where I'm actually a lot less optimistic than my mindsets have helped _you_ become, and I see the world and the bonds between people quite cynically right now. So, I wish whatever you've managed to teach yourself through seeing some wise fool's ideas carries you forward with as much Hope as you can grip onto. Carry that silver glow into the night and teach it to someone else. If a day comes when you lose all hope too, that glow will at least not be lost.

      @LeoKRogue Thank you for the response, truly your words mean alot but I do wanna say failures are human and sure I don't know your personal life in any way and I don't know how you've failed but you learn from your mistakes, as it is we would be nothing without them and that experience we gain from them and the knowledge we gain we can use to further improve other people's lives and what I meant by saying you were what I wanted to be was more in the mannerisms you have and the way you speak and how confident and in ways wise you are. I also have made really terrible mistakes, especially to people close to me, and I could never forgive myself for those mistakes. they will be with me for the rest of my life but through those failures I've been able to give advice to others and help them which doesn't repay what I've done but it certainly helps my consciousness. also I follow you on Twitter so sometimes your reposts pop up and you seem to be going through some tough personal things and I wanna say I'm sorry that you're going through a hard time and I wish good health to you Leo.

      @LeoKRogue 7 дней назад

      I'm not sure I understand. Climbing walls and object-to-object horizontal movement are _BOTH_ actually better in the classic system because a good player could do both of them faster, smoother and comfier than anything in 3 and forward, right? An AC1-Rev player who understands movement can get to a rooftop faster than anything the best Unity player in the entire world can do, simply because that's what each system provides at their peak, is what I'm trying to say.

    An excellent discussion between the two of you. AD is not only (arguably) the best player in terms of hands-to-buttons understanding/ability of Classic AC parkour among those with any sort of public recognition, but is also one of the most cogent thinkers & rhetoricians as pertains to the defence & promotion of the merits of Classic AC’s parkour. Even when it comes to the mods, his ability to foresee potential problems of misuse by the generally uninformed public of the mod’s expanded functionality has consistently been on point and his prophylactic efforts to prevent these in the mod’s promotion have no doubt been instrumental in ensuring that the public perception of the mod is at least largely line with the intentions of its creators. The impact that parkour choreo has had on the AC skilling scene in just the last 4 years has been remarkable and it’s clear that (at least within the more dedicated communities) the Overton window of parkour discourse has certainly shifted heavily in our favour, evidence of this being that even official Ubisoft products are using community parkour terminology, viz. Mirage eject patch notes. It’ll be interesting to see the effects of this moving forward, especially now with the mod existing as a concrete finished-product model for nigh exactly what we want from AC so long as it maintains the semi-automated movement paradigm it’s had since the beginning. Let’s hope Ubisoft finally takes the right message from the community on this issue.

    • @tgkthebawse

I hope that all of this "text" around Parkour online nowadays (where "text" is, discussion, videos, choreo, guides, etc) does have some kind of effect on at least conveying, hey, this is an element of play that is Valued and should be invested in beyond the minimum. Really happy to hear that it's still possible that someone who started from Odyssey can go back and appreciate and show off the classics. I hope that a good amount of new players coming in with Shadows will follow in these footsteps. I especially loved the way you referenced the Arkham games and how they expanded systems on each iteration, and it makes me all the more frustrated that AC didn't follow suit in the same way. The main point I'm taking away is that if Ubi ever made an AC game that's just a level designer with the fixed classic parkour system, I would play that game forever. Excited for part 2 ^_^

    I'm always surprised that, when talking about movement in classic AC, no one ever mentions that it's camera relative and not character relative. That has caused so much confusion and has affected the image of AC 1-Rev very negatively. The input to do a side eject in those game CHANGES based on where your camera is facing. If you know it, it's an easy thing to get around, but a lot of casual players failed to understand this.

    • @LeoKRogue
      @LeoKRogue 9 дней назад

      Yeah, I think it's one of those things people who know about it don't really think to mention because it's so intuitive, instinctive and automatic. Like of course you would play that way, it just makes sense to us. But I could see how players who don't know about it would be pretty confused about what their Assassin is doing at times.

I feel we do a pretty good job of recognizing that ACU does feel convenient and comfy for descending but it kind of ends there because everything else comes stapled to a bruuutal downgrade in feel and function. :( The real problem is just that, there actually ISN'T much conversation left to pursue there, everyone already knows the state of things and the only people still really talking about it are the ones who haven't heard every argument yet. Of course the end goal is to make something that looks as nice and has as much general comfort to use without nuking fine control but yeah.
